I’m fed up with all the “Bluehost alternatives” articles recommending companies that aren’t really much better than Bluehost, and some even worse.
If you see HostGator on the list, run and don’t look back! HostGator is basically the exact same thing as Bluehost. Both are owned by Newfold Digital and both have the same marketing/billing practices, same infrastructure, same outsourced support, etc.
Everyone may have a different opinion, so here’s mine…
My vote for the best Bluehost alternative goes to Shock Hosting and HostArmada. Both have been great in my experience.
Shock Hosting is the cheapest alternative with much lower renewal prices than Bluehost and better support service. The shared hosting plan I use costs $3/month and renews for that price too. It’s been the same price for years. Haven’t had any downtime with them. It’s good for light WordPress websites and blogs, but I haven’t tried it for heavy things like an eCommerce store.
HostArmada has also been fantastic. Their support agents know their stuff better than Bluehost’s outsourced agents. Their servers are less crowded and they don’t charge an extra fee for email or any of the essential features. The only con is that the renewal price is higher than the introductory price, but I find it reasonable for what they offer.
Other Alternatives I Don’t Particularly Like
Hostinger is decent but support isn’t as good as it used to be after they switched to the AI chatbot. They used to offer free email with their hosting plans but now it’s only free for the first year then you pay a renewal fee for each email account. I’d mainly recommend it if you need a low-cost eCommerce builder and you don’t want to use WooCommerce.
Namecheap has lower renewal rates than Bluehost and overall it’s a better host. What I don’t like is that SSL certificates aren’t free and cost extra to renew (about $13/year for each certificate). They also increase renewal prices from time to time.
IONOS is more popular in Europe. They offer low intro prices then hike up your renewal bill. Upselling is bad and they make it difficult to cancel auto-renewal (you have to call them to cancel your plan.)
SiteGround has a good infrastructure but their high renewal prices are a turn-off. I’ve heard that their support isn’t as good these days as it used to be, but for me their renewal pricing is what keeps me away.
HostGator and Network Solutions are owned by the same parent company that owns Bluehost (Newfold Digital), so that’s an automatic nope from me. They’re basically the same under the hood but with different branding and storefronts.
